National Conference Quarter Final

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 56 : Bridgend Blue Bulls 6

The national premier conference rugby league quarter final saw the Hammersmith Hills Hoists travel to Swindon and record a 10 try, 58-6 victory over a big and physical Welsh outfit the Bridgend Blue Bulls outfit.

The Blue Bulls came out with guns blazing and aided by the assistance of a strong tailwind, gave spectators the impression this one would go down to the wire.  The Hoists defended well and weathered 4 consecutive sets on their own line to maintain a 0-0 deadlock after 15 minutes. After the first repeat set for the Hoists, a short side play from Wayde Kelly saw the only remaining original Hoist from 2009, Joe Riesterer, bulldoze his way over from 5 meters out on the last tackle.  Some excellent work from rake Wade Cairns around the ruck enabled forwards, in particular Darren Booth, Dan Schembri and George ‘Barge-Arse’ Smibert to contribute to the score with some clever lines and strong running.

From then on it was mostly one way traffic for the Hoists. A smart, pin point kick from a dominant Tayler Sorensen was scooped up by new boy Richie West in one of the tries of the season, catching and placing the football mid air and just inside the touchline. West backed this up through his consistent support play to bag his second just minutes later after a strong run and quick play the ball from Donny Hynes.  The right side for the Hoists proved to be just as troublesome for the Blue Bulls, With James Sharp and Judd Greenhalgh involved in several attacking raids.

With 28-0 halftime score the Hoists were in a commanding position, especially as they would have the wind in the second half.  The Blue Bulls attempted a short kick off which back fired as former union player Jose Corriera plucked it out of the air and make it almost back to halfway. The momentum enabled Graham Forsyth to storm down the pitch and offload (his first pass for 2011!) a superb ball to put fellow prop Dan Schembri in open space, Schembri found ever-present Murray Crapp and tipped on to send Crapp over the line. It was another Crapp try minutes later after some great work by second-rower-for-a-day Darren Booth.

A brief laps in concentration on the Hoists line resulted in the Blue Bulls scoring a consolation try in the last set of the match, all in all though it was a great result for the Hoists as they march towards a national final birth in September.

Great performances by all, especially Wade Cairns, Murray Crapp andTaylor Sorenson who earned the 3,2,1 respectively. Tries Muz 2, Wade 2, Richie 2, Smoking Joe 2, George 'Barge Arse' Smibert 1 and Frenchie French 1. Goals Wayde- 7/8, Tay 2/2.

Semi Final

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 32 : West London Sharks 0

A home semi-final against the West London Sharks was never going to be taken lightly. The Sharks always seem to play their best in a West London Derby and this game was no exception. The Hills Hoists could not make any ground early in the piece and this gave the Sharks the sniff they needed to get moving. The Hoists were pinned on their own try line in the early exchanges, but managed to hold out a hungry Sharks offence with Darren Booth, Dan Schembri and Luke Bolster throwing their bodies around like rag dolls. However, the Hoists could not really get over themselves, missing a few early chances to score. This deadlock lasted for nearly 20 minutes with both teams really showing their defensive mettle.

The deadlock was finally broken when Brenton Winnell made a tremendous line break to set up Frenchman Albin Malguy for a try. This was the spark the Hoists needed and they did not disappoint. The Sharks were soon defending multiple sets on their own line and Wayde Kelly took advantage with an enterprising play to get Englishman Lewis Jones across. Just before half time Dayne Boyd made another brilliant line break to put another Englishman Judd Green-Halgh over the try line. Wayde Kelly was able to convert 2 from 3 to make it 16-0 at halftime.

The half time talk was all about consdolidation, everyone knew the Sharks would come out hungry and they were right. The second half echoed the first with excellent defence from both teams. Bolster was again a standout with some amazing tackles that really held up the Sharks offence. The breakthrough finally came with some brilliant team play when Murray Crapp slipped through the defence before offloading to Kelly who ultimately put James Sharpe over.

A concussion to Eddy Alty after some hard nosed defence saw utility sub Tim Smith come on, and he almost made an immediate impact but was ruled held up, This set up a magnificant Kelly kick to the corner which was easily collected by an unmarked Joe Reisterer.

The final minutes saw Dayne Boyd throw an amazing flick pass to a concussed Winnell for the nail in the coffin. Hills Hoists 32-0 Sharks.

The Hills Hoists play St Albans in their first Southern Premier Grand Final at Hemel Hampstead on Saturday 13th August.

Tryscorers (Albin Malguy, Lewis Jones, Judd Green-Halgh, James Sharpe, Joe Reisterer, Brenton Winnell) Conversions (Wayde Kelly 3, James Sharpe)

Round 12

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 44 : West London Sharks 28

The Hammersmith Hills Hoists travelled to St Albans on Saturday for their last away game of the premiership season.  Hoists were wary of a St Albans side that was coming off the back of two losses and would be looking to turn things around in front of their home crowd, and it turns out they had good reason to be.

St Albans bolted out of the blocks in what proved to be a fiery encounter with a first-up try to captain Shane Rampling.  Solid defence on both sides followed, however three quick tries to the Hoists via Winger Joe Riesterer, back rower Brenton Winnell, and a spectacular team try finished off by fullback Jason Wren-Pattison saw the Hoists take a comfortable 18-6 lead midway through the first half.

The lead was soon relinquished however, with two converted tries to the centurions bringing the scores level at 18 all.  Some clever work by hooker Tayler Sorensen enabled the Hoists to take a 24-18 lead into the half-time break.

The second half once again began with the Centurions scoring first points, then a tug-o-war began with both sides going try for try until centre James Sharp found another gear and scored two solid tries in succession.

St Albans became increasingly frustrated and tempers flared, a melee involving several players ended up seeing Dan Loader and the Centurions lock forward take a 10 minute spell on the side line.

The Hoists then took advantage of the open conditions and five-eigth Dayne Boyd capitalised with a clever four pointer before the siren, taking the final score to 44-28.

Captain-coach Wayde Kelly had another solid day with the boot, converting 6 from 8 in windy conditions.  Kelly said post match ”Overall it was a pleasing result, the boys once again showing solid character and finishing strongly as we have done all year, the biggest danger for the team now with finals football around the corner is complacency, we have to stay hungry and strive to be at our peak for grand final day”.

Player’s player on the day went to centre James Sharp, with votes also coming in for Michael Crosby and George Simbert.

Round 11

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 32 : West London Sharks 16

Hoists win tough local derby against Sharks

The Hoists travelled to Chiswick on a wet and miserable Saturday afternoon for the local derby against the West London outfit. Played in less then perfect conditions for rugby league, ball security was going to be a major factor in this contest. The Hoists once again continued with the recent trend in conceding the first try, it was a neat kick by the Sharks behind the defensive line that caught the hoists off guard. It took a few sets for the Hoists to finally get into the game and with some good field position were able to open their account with a try to fullback Jason Patterson. Its wasn’t long though before the Sharks hit back with a try out wide after the visitors where caught short in defence. With only a few minutes before half time Daniel Marzella was able to drive over from close range after picking up a loose ball. Half time score 10-8 to Hammersmith.

The Hoists started the second half much better then the first, with two penalties helping them to great field position, one for a late hit on Wayde Kelly by human wrecking ball Trevor Leota, earning the Samoan rugby international a ten minute stint on the sidelines. This lead to fullback Pattersons second try where he beat 5 or 6 sharks defenders to step his way to the line. With confidence growing for the Hoists there was a superb piece of individual brilliance from five eight Dayne Boyd who chipped and re-gathered for himself before offloading to centre James Sharpe to cross out wide. Despite the awkward looking kick that didn’t really get over shoulder height and teammates saying it was a miss kick, Boyd claimed after the game it was “defiantly on purpose”. The Sharks threatened to come back into the game with a try under the posts but this was countered by a try to Hoists forward Tim Smith at the other end. The Hoists weren’t finished yet and from a scrum 30m out from the line, Boyd and fullback Patterson combined to unleash the Dragon, a brilliant set move they had been working on, which lead to Patterson getting an untouched passage to the try line to complete his hat trick. Smoking Joe also crossed out wide late in the game. Final score 32-16 to Hammersmith.

Players player points went to “Mr. Perfect” Jason Paterson, with Brenton Winnell, Daniel Marzella and Dayne Boyd getting a point each. The Hoists now look forward to a big game next weekend with a trip to second placed side St Albans.

Round 10

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 60 : South London Storm 18

After three successive wins the South London Storm were on cloud nine but a 60-18 thumping from the Hammersmith Hills Hoists on Saturday brought them crashing back to earth.

The Storms reality check came in the form of 11 HHH and nine conversions from skipper Wayde Kelly with the Southern Premier Conference ladder leaders showed no mercy at Croyden on Saturday.

With the wind at their backs Storm struck first to take an early 6-0 advantage and managed to compete for the first 40 minutes.

They trailed HHH 22-6 at the break but at the change of ends were blown off the park with a second half Hammersmith blitz.

Celebrating his first match back from a knee reconstruction centre Ben Baggott claimed a hatrick in a cameo appearance.

Kelly claimed a double with Lewis Jones, Dan Schembri, Daniel Marzella, Peter Clarke, Jason Patterson and Albin Malguy all scoring one try a piece.

Schembri received the nod for players player in a match where no Hoist could put a foot wrong.

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 60 (tries: Ben Baggot 3, Wayde Kelly 2 , Lewis Jones, Dan Schembri, Daniel Marzella, Peter Clarke, Jason Patterson, Albin Malguy; Conversions: Kelly 9/11) defeated London Storm 18

Round 9

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 40 : Eastern Rhinos 22

The Hills Hoists met the Eastern Rhinos for the second time this season and put in a solid effort to win 40-22. However, things did not go to plan in the first 10 minutes where the Hoists gave away three silly penalties that led to some tough goal line defence. The Hoists managed to keep out the Rhinos but ironically gave up a try from an unforced error when attempting to gain some ground.

The call around the ground was to settle things down and make no more silly mistakes and after gaining some good field position a great cut-out pass from Taylor Sorenson put Leigh Smith over the line on the wing. Only minutes later and a great line break by James Sharpe set up Dayne Boyd for another try and put the Hoists in front 12-6.

Hitting the lead seemed to give the Hoists a false sense of security as the Rhinos rallied and found some holes in the defence. Scoring twice in 10 minutes to again take the lead 12-16.

Then Rhinos were penalised with a yellow late in the half for kicking and playing with 12 men gave Jason Patterson some space to step over the try line. Then straight from the kick-off Brad Toole ran nearly 50 metres that led to Dayne Boyd going over in the dying minutes with the half time score moving to 24-16.

The second half saw a hungry Rhinos side take the first opportunity going over to make the scores 24-22. The Hills Hoists forwards had to step up and work hard, with Darren Booth and Brad Toole putting in great defensive efforts. Soon after, another card was shown for kicking, this time red. This meant the remaining 20 minutes would be 13 vs 12 and it certainly showed on the scoreboard with Jason Patterson getting over for his hat trick and Tim Smith showing some good form setting up a try for himself. The nail in the coffin came from full back Jason Patterson going over for his fourth with some brilliant individual magic.

Hammersmith 40 (tries: Leigh Smith, Dayne Boyd 2, Jason Patterson 4, Tim Smith. Conversions: Taylor Sorenson 2, Wayde Kelly 2) defeated 22 Eastern Rhinos

Round 8

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 32 : St Albans 12

Playing out of position Hammersmith Hills Hoists strike weapon Dayne Boyd highlighted his versatility with a five star performance at fullback in the Hoists 32-12 victory over St Alban’s Centurions in the Southern Premier Conference.

In the absence of regular custodian Jason Pattison, Boyd shifted from five-eighth to fullback with Taylor Sorenson taking Boyd’s usual role at pivot.

Boyd was outstanding in the number one jumper earning him the players’ player pint while Sorenson also demonstrated his utility value putting in a strong showing at five-eighth.

With the home ground advantage Hammersmith came out with all guns blazing racing to a 16-0 lead after just 17 minutes.

Brenton Winnell (4th minute), Wayde Kelly (10th minute) and Dan “Stifler” Loader (17th minute) all crossing

The Centurions opened their account five minutes later to make it 16-4, and that score remained until half-time.

Hammersmith didn't take long to put the Centurions to the sword, laying on the next three tries to build an unassailable 32-4 advantage with 17 minutes remaining.

The green and gold colours were shining bright with some superb ball movement as Boyd, centre Murray Crapp and Albin “Escargot” Malguy adding their name to the score sheet, ensuring the 2011 HHH unbeaten record remains intact.

Two consolation tries to St Alban’s added some respectability to the scoreline.

Hammersmith 32 (Brenton Winnell, Wayde Kelly, Dan Loader, Dayne Boyd, Murray Crapp, Albin Malguy tries; Kelly 4 conversions) defeated St Alban's Centurions 12.

Round 7

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 24 : West London Sharks 12

Commitment. Dedication. Heart. Three vital ingredients that saw the Hoists continue their unbeaten run on the weekend with a gutsy 24-12 win over West London Sharks.

With Royal Ascot on, it was always going to be tough for any team with a high contingency of antipodeans in their teams. As it was for the Hoists and Sharks, when they travelled to St Albans for the first ever Magic Round weekend. The Sharks were able to muster 15 players, the Hoists – only 14.

Looking to carry on their unbeaten run and to give coach Bobby Wykamp a fond farewell, the Hoists did not begin the game too well – defending on their line for the first 10 minutes thanks to a howling breeze. However, once they became settled, the Hoists soon started to make good field possession due to some hard running by Dan Schembri and Mike Crosby. This lead to the Hoists crossing over for the first points thanks to Albin and taking the lead 4-0.

The swirling breeze on kick off again caused havoc with the Hoists giving up possession on their line straight away. Again having to defend their line, the Hoists tired and after a sneaky grubber through into the deep in goals, the Sharks took the lead – 6-4.

From the kick off, the Hoists rallied through some strong defence and were soon on the attack. After trying hard to penetrate their line with strong runs from Luke Bollster and Scottish, the ball was swung out wide and Mark Chapman scored after a lucky turn and bounce of the ball. The Hoists went into half time leading 8 – 6.

After half time, the Hoists were looking to capitalise by using the strong breeze. However, after giving the ball up of the kick off, the Sharks soon crossed again and took the lead 12 – 8. Both teams kept attacking their respective opposition lines and it was only through strong defence from the Hoists that the Sharks didn’t score again.

With Dan ‘Take Your Medicine’ Swanson going off injured, Murray was moved in to the halves. Here he became more involved in the game and instantly pulled some magic out. With a small chip and chase, he was able to gather the ball before passing out wide to the flying Albin who crossed for his 2nd of the day. 14 – 12.

It wasn’t long before the Hoists were attacking the line again with a great move from Murray putting returning founder Matthew ‘Gorbo’ Cameron through a screaming hole. Unable to convert from that play, the Hoists kept the pressure on and Murray soon crossed over for a well-deserved 4 pointer. Hoists lead 18 – 12.

There was little time left on the board and the Hoists were not going to take their foot off the pedal. Invigorated by their dominance, the Hoists were soon finding gaps at will through the Sharks defence. Captain, and now coach, Wayde Kelly used his skill and size to power through a gaping hole right near full time. The Hoists were victorious 24 – 12.

‘The game was by no means pretty,’ Kelly said afterwards. ‘But we came here today undermanned, and were determined to get the 4 points. There was never any talk of anything less and the boys pulled through. It says a lot about the character of the players.’

Man of the Match went to Murray Crapp who disproved the theory that you need a good warm up to play your best. ‘It was an inspirational move to take The Wiz off and put me in to the halves. He was dead wood out there,’ Murray was heard to comment after the game.

The Hoists now look to continue their dominance against last years winners St Albans at Twyford Oval this week.

The Scottish product defended with purpose and continually threatened in attack pointing to a bright future in the representative arena.

The one off match was in the balance at half-time with the Lions holding a slender 10-6 advantage.

Injuries to Ex-Pat front rowers had the Commonwealth boys on the back foot after the break.

Community Lions dominated the ruck and the remainder of the match to run out convincing victors 40-10.

Round 6

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 36 : London Scholars 22

Hammersmith Hills Hoists staved off a gallant London Scholars outfit 36-20 to continue their unbeaten run in the Southern Premier Conference.

Missing nine players from the starting side due to representative commitments and travel the Hoists, with some heavy exchanges early, took an early lead crossing for two converted tries thanks to some excellent attacking football from Grant 'Cuzzy' Thompson.

Leading 12 nil after ten minutes the Hoists had all the running but the 14 man Scholars outfit dug deep and got themselves back in the contest scoring the next two tries.

However, with only one reserve fatigue began to set in and the Hoists scored three times before half-time.

Departing player coach Bobby Wykamp celebrated his farewell match with a four pointer, despite coming from a blatant forward pass it was a just reward for Wykamp who was also reprieved from a dreaded nude run.

After Wykamp's effort replacement dummy half Aaron Redfern and front rower Brad Toole both crossed to give the Hoists a 24-10 lead at the break.

Punctuated by penalties, it was two tries a piece in the second stanza. Five-eighth Dayne Boyd got his name on the score sheet before pint sized lock Dan 'Wiazrd' Swanson" displayed great determination, footwork and strength to score a brilliant individual try.

Scholars scored a consolation try in the dying minutes to make it 36 - 20, but there were not enough minutes on the baord to establish any kind of comeback.

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 36 (Grant Thompson, Josh Ironside, Bobby Wykamp, Aaron Redfern, Dayne Boyd, Danial Swanson: tries; Wade Cairns 2, Taylor Sorenson, Murray Crapp: goals) defeated London Scholars 22.

Round 5

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 30 : South London Storm 6

HOISTS WEATHER STORM TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED

The Hammersmith Hills Hoists have completed the first round of home and away games undefeated after a 30-6 win over South London Strom Twyford Ave.

The Hoists got off to a great start with an excellent finish by winger Jimmy Jones somehow scoring despite the attention of 3 storm defenders and the sideline. It wasnt long before Jones was over the line again for his second try, this time on the end of some slick backline movement. The Hosts were soon out to a comfortable 14-0 lead after hooker Taylor Sorenson darted over from close range and converted his own try. From here both teams were guilty of mistakes which lead to the Strom pressuring the Hoists line but the defence was solid and kept the Storm scoreless.

Shortly before halftime centre Mike Liebrium was given a yellow card after a spear tackle, score going into the break 14-0 to the hosts.

The second half started similar to the end of first with both teams guilty of mistakes however it was Hoists who took advantage with backrower Mick Crosby collecting a loose ball and showing a clean set of heels to sprint 80m to score under the posts. The next try came in similar fashion however this time it was the Storm who capitalised on a Hoists mistake, opening their scoring with an against the run of play try. Late tries to front rower Brad Toole and fullback Jason Patterson put the result beyond doubt. Final score 30-6.

Coach Bobby Wykamp was pleased with the win adding It was a good hit out for the team in very hot conditions. I was really pleased with a number of players who backed up from the London league match with limited notice. They really performed and will pushing now for selection in firsts. In sections we were at our best with good shape in attack and solid defence showing no signs of the Storm breaking our line.

But we did drop off in stages and we need to do a bit more work with our ball control to minimise pushing the pass and loose carries

Round 2

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 64 : South London Storm 20

The Hammersmith Hills Hoists London League Merit team had their first test on home soil for 2011 on Saturday.

Head coach Bobby Wykamp dropped back players Taylor Sorensen and Dan 'The Wizard' Swanson to help guide the new-look team around the park for the first half.

The traffic was all one way for the first 40 minutes, with a notable highlight being big Gavin Anderson's first try in the Hoists jersey, the half time scoreline was 40-8 to the Hoists.

In the second half, Sorensen and The Wizard left the pitch, and for a short while, momentum seemed to turn the way of the Storm.  However, they boys all pulled together and each man started playing for the man beside him, and once again the points started to flow freely for the Hoists.

Hooker Aaron 'Taz' Redfern and halfback Leigh 'I just want to help out' Smith formed a formidable combination, with Taz scoring a double and Leigh running in a man-of-the-match performance with a hat-trick of tries on the day. Inaugural Hoist Joe Reisterer sent a message to the coaching staff with a fine first-up performance since his broken nose suffered during the 9s.  Hoists also welcomed back 2010 grand finalist David 'Frenchie' French for the match, Frenchie showing some good form in the halves and crossed for a try.

Other tries went to Dan Schembri, Dan 'The Wizard' Swanson, and Lewis Jones.  Lewis also turned a few heads with some fine goal kicking against a fierce cross-field wind.

Club president Steve Royle remarked after the win: "It was always going to be a real test of courage for the boys once some of the senior players left the field at half time, and it was very pleasing to see a team with so many new faces pull together and run up a very impressive 2nd half scoreline after a shaky start.  If this team can keep working together throughout the year it is very likely that the club will be looking at a third successive premiership in the London Merit League this year."

Round 3

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 52 : Eastern Rhinos 6

Hammersmith Hills Hoists are on top of the Southern Premier Rugby League ladder after demolishing the Eastern Rhinos 52-6 at Colchester on Saturday.

It was the Hoists third successive victory, producing a polished performance across the paddock as they ran rampant over the previously unbeaten Rhinos.

Coach Bobby Wykamp praising his charges as Hammersmith continues to grow from strength to strength.
We are really starting to build momentum and with momentum comes confidence,
said Wykamp.

Our nine, seven, six and one were outstanding today they are combining well, and looking at the effort today you would think they have been playing together for four years.

It didn
t take the Hoists long to find their groove.

The Rhinos paid the penalty after their fullback failed to grasp a swirling Wayde Kelly kick.
In the ensuing set, Kelly fired an exquisite cutout pass to send centre James Sharp over on the left edge.
Then the Rhinos winger made a meal of another Kelly bomb and the Hoists French flier Albin Malguy pounced on the loose ball to score in the corner.

The Hoists piled on a further 20 points before halftime. Sharp claimed his second four pointer for the afternoon, while five eighth Dayne Boyd, winger Leigh Smith and lock Mick Crosby all added their names to the match sheet before the break.

Crosby
s try came thanks to some freakish Hammersmith ball movement, a spectacular passage of play which included a string of 13 passes.

After the Hoists launched a fifth tackle raid on the right edge, the ball went to Smith near the sideline. Just as Smith looked to be comfortably contained by three Rhinos defenders he somehow managed to unload a magic flick pass. After another five passes Crosby crashed over to cap off the dazzling lead-up work.

Up 30-nil running into the wind the Hoists had the match in the bag at halftime but weren
t about to relent any pressure.
The green and gold defensive line proved almost impenetrable.

Eastern's sole try came from a one on one rake. Off a Hoists scrum play inside their own quarter, a Rhinos replacement snatched the pill from Sharp
s hands and then scampered over to score under the posts.

In contrast the Rhinos had no answer to the Hoists attack and Hammersmith kicked on to notch its first half-century for the 2011 season. Tries to fullback Jason Pattison (2), backrower Brenton Winnell and right centre Murray Crapp rounded off the 52-6 drubbing.

Players
player went to Pattison. In trying conditions the custodian was unflappable under the high ball and continually provided headaches for the Rhinos defence.

Wykamp hopes the form of Pattison and several other Hammersmith players will catch the attention of Commonwealth Ex-Pat selectors.

The Commonwealth Ex-Pats will play a against an English Amateur team as a curtain raiser to the International Origin England v Exiles clash at Headingley on June 10.

Jas (Pattison) in particular was outstanding today, but there are a few of our boys who have put their hand up to play for the ex-pats and it would be great if their hard work is rewarded with rep honours,
said Wykamp.

Hammersmith first grade play a catch up game against West London Sharks this Thursday evening at Twyford Avenue Sportsground. Kickoff 7.15pm.

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 52 (James Sharp 2, Jason Pattison 2, Murray Crapp, Mick Crosby, Leigh Smith, Brenton Winnell, Dayne Boyd, Albin Malguy tries; Wayde Kelly 4, Wade Cairns 2 goals) defeated Eastern Rhinos 6.

Round 2

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 44 : St Albans Centurions 14

Hammersmith Hills Hoists humbled defending premiers St Albans Centurions on their home turf dishing out a 44-14 drubbing at St Albans on Saturday.

Hoists didn't waste any time to get the score board moving when fullback Jason Patterson burst onto an off load to claim first points.

Then in an 18 minute period Hammersmith wiped off the Centurions off park, the home side struggling to control the Hoists second phase play.

Tries to Brenton Winnell, Dean Lockhart, Murray Crapp and Brad Toole and three conversions from Wayde Kelly saw Hammersmith mount a 28-0 advantage in 28 minutes.

On the half hour from a penalty the Saints progressed into the Hoists half.

Mick Wade launched a kick into the corner for centre Russ Kelloway to score making 28 - 4 at the break.

In the second half the Centurions showed greater discipline and commitment in nullifying the Hoists off loads.

But at the 55 minute mark Pattison snared his second try then just four minutes later Dean Lockhart also claimed his double.

Kelly converting both tries, to hand the Hoists a 40 - 4 lead.

With 20 minutes left on the clock the Saints hit back when hooker Shane Rampling dived over from dummy half to score.

Then made it back to back tries when loose forward Miles Dempsey was in the right place at the right time. Mike Wade put up a high ball which was allowed to bounce and Miles was on hand to score. Gareth Waters converted.

However the Hoists weren't finished, capping off the victory in style. Lively front rower Brad Toole intercepted a long ball by the Saints and raced 70 metres before sending lock forward Mike Crosby over for a well deserved try.

Crosby received the players player award.

Hammersmith Hills Hoists London League team launched their season with a dogged 18-14 victory over Hemel Stags.

It was the Hoists first hit-out for the season and it showed early with an error ridden first half.

The Hoists rhythm was punctuated by consistent drop ball and the Stags took advantage scoring the first two tries of the match.

But in the ten minute period leading up to half-time Hammersmith began to complete their sets and the greater ball control quickly led to points.

Dummy half Aaron "Taz" Redfern put his side on the scoreboard scooting over under the posts from close range.

Then captain Chris Peach produced a smart pass to send George Smibert in out wide and the Hoists had the upper hand leading 10-8 at half-time.

In the second half the Hoists picked up where they left off as Redfern claimed a brilliant individual try.

Jumping out of dummy half "Taz" seared through the line then showed a clean set of heals to beat the fullback all ends up, racing 70 metres to score beside the posts.

From the next set Smibert accepted another try assist from Peach and the Hoists had an 18-8 lead.

Some poor discipline allowed the Stags back in the match, after their five-eighth scored a converted try it was a four point ball game.

But a serious ankle injury suffered by one of the Hemel players forced referee Steve Davis to call full-time ten minutes early.

The Hoists were awarded the match and Redfern was named players player.

Hammersmith Hills Hoists 18 (Aaron Redfern 2, George Smibert 2 tries; Chris Peach 2 goals) defeated Hemel Stags 14.

ANZAC Challenge Cup

London Aussies V London Kiwis

7th May 2011

Australia has retained the prestigious London Anzac Challenge Rugby League trophy after a dominant 42-6 victory over New Zealand at Twyford Avenue Sportsground on Saturday.

A crowd of 3000 people lined the Twyford fences to witness the titanic tussle and as predicted by coach Bobby Wykamp adrenaline was pumping. Following a stirring rendition of the Haka the Kiwis threw everything they had at the Aussies.

With some heavy exchanges several Aussies were on the receiving end of some bone jarring Kiwi defence. However in the face of adversity the London Kangaroos kept their composure and weathered the early storm, recording an emphatic nine tries to one win.

The performance drawing high praise from Wykamp; “I’m extremely happy with way the team played, 1 to 20 did their job extremely well, with very few mistakes and all the players showed a lot of guts in defence while maintaining our shape in attack.”

“I couldn’t ask for much more it was a great team effort,” Wykamp added.

At the 20-minute fatigue was evident in the Kiwi ranks and the green and gold colours started to shine in attack.

Captain Wayde Kelly produced first points, darting over from a second phase to give his side a 6 nil advantage.

Then five-eighth Dane Boyd found the line before Murray Crapp crossed out wide to give the Hoists a 14-point buffer at the break.

The second half saw the Hoists pile on a further 28 points with Boyd claiming his double; Darren Booth matched Boyd with two tries of his own. Ben Thomas, Mick Crosby and Jason Pattison also chimed in with a try each.

Players’ player honours went to Wentworthville front rower Darren Booth. On top of his try scoring double, the mobile prop showed true Anzac character in some brutal clashes up front.

London Kiwis 42 (Dayne Boyd 2, Darren Booth 2, Wayde Kelly, Mick Crosby, Jason Pattison, Ben Thomas tries; Wayde Kelly 5 conversions) defeated London Kiwis 6.

Round 1

Hoists to good for Bulldogs

in season opener

Saturday saw the Hoists travel to East London to face Hainault Bulldogs in the opening round of the Southern Premier competition. A tough encounter was expected after two fiery tussles last year. The windy conditions made it difficult for both teams with a mistake from the home side from the kick off putting the Hoists in great field position to allow Mike Leibrum to cross out wide for the opening try.

The second Hoists try again came after a Hainault mistake, a great kick chase from winger Murray Crapp saw him pouncing on the loose ball to score. The game then fell into an arm wrestle with both teams guilty of mistakes, however some excellent goal line defence saw the Hoists repel a number of repeat sets on the their line and hold the Bulldogs scoreless.

The Hoists would have like to have gone into the break with the opposition scoreless after having useof the wind in the first half however it wasn’t to be as a grounded Hoists’ pass lead to runaway Hainault try.

There were good signs for the Hoists in the early part of the second half after a run away 60m try to the flying Frenchman Albin Malguy and a well structured try to prop Darren Booth under the posts that took the hoists out to a comfortable lead. Again the hoists defence was excellent after the Bulldogs had numerous repeat sets on the try line, especially at one stage when down to 11 men as Wayde Kelly (sin bin) and Tim Smith (sent off) were off the field.

Late tries to Jason Patterson and a second to Mike Lieberum put the result beyond doubt, the visitorsrunning out victors 34-10.  Player’s player was split between Brad Toole and Daniel ‘Wizard’ Swanson.

Coach Bobby Wykamp was very pleased with the first up win “The defence today was awesome, especially on our own line.  Its great to start the season with a good win and it’s something to build on going into the ANZAC challenge next week and the rest of the season”.

  Hills Hoists Three-Peat!

2011 started off as good as can been expected with the Hills Hoists retaining their title in the London 9’s Carnival for the third time running.

On what was a glorious sunny down in Acton, many teams from within London and outside converged on the Hoists home ground to kick off the London Rugby League season.

The pre-tournament favourites, Hemel Stags and Hammersmith, both got off to flying starts but 2010 Harry Jepson Trophy winners St Albans Centurions were also expected to mount a serious challenge on their first appearance in the competition.

The Hoists were dominant early, winning games over St Albans, Try Tag, Bedford and Skolars before losing their way against Hemel. After a quick rev up from stand-in coach Aaron Redfern, the boys started to get back into the rhythm against Storm before coming up against a much more disciplined and determined Sharks outfit.

At the end of the round robin stage, the Hoists finished 3rd on points difference and were set to meet the Sharks again in the semi-finals.

Knowing the success of previous Hoists teams, the boys soon turned it up a knot and came away with a hard fought win over the Sharks to progress to the Final against Try Tag.

Super coach Redfern, pulled the boys in for a final inspirational chat before sending them into battle. The Hoists played controlled, disciplined football throughout the final to come away convincing winners on the day.

“It is always great to retain a trophy. This means a lot to the boys and to the club. It is a competition that we love to win. Now we need to focus on the start of the official competition in order to prove ourselves there again this ear,”

It was hard to nominate best players for the day as everyone contributed to a whole team victory: however, Brenton Winnel was voted Players player for the day. Other players to stand out were Dan ‘The Whiz’ Swanson, Daniel Loader, Dean Lockhart, and Ben Dawbin. It was also great to see new French recruit Albien making strong contributions on the wing. It looks like Smoking Joe may have his work out for him this year holding down a spot!

Hoists Win First Trial Match

The Hills Hoists got their year underway with a trial match against West London Sharks, winning 32-10.

With plenty of numbers turning up to training, it was time for the Hoists to put it all into practice with a competitive match. West London have always provided a physical opponent and this match was no exception.

After an early contest, the Hoists soon settled into their flow and were able to make breaks at will. Captain Wade Kelly was extremely happy with the hit out and said that their were a few players who really impressed.

Awards for the day went to: Forward of the game- Toolie, Back of the game Jase with 3 tries
